Cabbagewho lifted six major trophies with the west Londoners between 2003 and 2010, made the proposal while speaking to talkSPORT at the launch of Soccer Aid 2024.

When asked if he felt like boss of Chelsea Mauricio Pochettino is the right man to take the club forward, the former England international was quick to express his support for the under fire Argentino, before offering his advice.

Cole told talkSPORT: “I would look to bring in some experienced players to set the tone.

“I'm thinking: Is Luka Modric out (of contract)? Does he want to come and play in the Premier League for another year?

Then he pointed to Modricto inspire his younger teammates: “He is still doing things at Real Madrid. And how much has he helped (Eduardo) Camavinga, (Aurelien) Tchouameni, (Federico) Valverde?

“It would have had a lot of influence on them as players.”

The 42-year-old coach also questioned the availability of the Croatian midfielder: “Toni Kroos is 34 years old. Do you want to test yourself at his age? Come here and help this young team.

“They are just names that come to mind, I don't know their situation.”

Cole made 282 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea and scored 39 goals.

And while Cole's wish may seem unlikely at first glance with the aging pair apparently approaching the end of their careers, there is a slim chance either player could consider a dramatic move to England.

With Modric and Kroos without contract in spanish giants At the end of the season and both still without closing new agreements, this has fueled rumors that their future could be far from Madrid.

Mauricio Pochettino defends the 'incredible' Raheem Sterling and responds to the Chelsea fans who booed him against Leicester

Despite Spanish media claiming that Modric's most likely next destinations are the Saudi Pro League or MLS, perhaps the 38-year-old could be open to a return to the Premier League, having starred for Tottenham between 2008 and 2012.

Even if Chelsea fail to carry out Cole's unlikely transfer suggestion, the three-time league champion with the club remains optimistic about the future of his former employer.

Describing Pochettino as a 'senior manager' later in the interview, he also observed: “It's a time of transition for the club, we know that. “There are very, very young players.”

Cole went on to praise the group's potential and praised the former Spurs boss for clearly outlining his plans for the team, adding: “There's so much talent there, there's so much potential.

“I think Poch has done a great job because he constantly delves into that narrative. You can't look at this Chelsea team like you would the Chelsea teams of the past.

“This is a team that is developing, the objectives are different.”
