Luka Modric pays heartfelt tribute to Real Madrid teammate Toni Kroos – 'There will never be another'
In recent hours, tributes have been pouring in following Toni Kroos' announcement that he will retire from football after this summer's European Championship. The 34-year-old will play his final match at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, and his final Real Madrid game in the Champions League final.
Perhaps the most poignant tribute to Kroos came from his long-time midfield partner Luka Modric, who sent a fantastic message to the German maestro on Instagram.
“Toni, it is difficult for me to write these words. The football world is sad because a historic player is leaving, and I admit that I am also very sad. Friend, you are a legend of this sport and a legend of Real Madrid. I really enjoyed playing alongside you. It was an honor to share the Real Madrid midfield with you. You have qualities that make you a unique and special player, and there will never be another Toni Kroos. Unforgettable European nights, titles, the magic of the Bernabeu – we will never forget this golden era at the club in our lives. You got it all, but you still have one more. Together for 15. I will miss you, my friend.
Kroos' retirement announcement means it is increasingly likely that Modric will stay Real Madrid for at least another 12 months, although there's no doubt he'd prefer them to be teammates.
