Southampton have held talks with Peterborough over the transfer of standout defender Ronnie Edwards, talkSPORT understands.

The newly promoted Saints are among a number of Premier League clubs to show interest in England's European Under-19 Championship winner.

Edwards, 21, made his senior debut for Peterborough in 2020 and has appeared a total of 142 times in all competitions.

Despite their relegation from the Championship in the 2021/22 campaign, the centre-back was named Player of the Season.

He has since become a regular starter for the team but could be ready for the Premier League beyond the summer.

Southampton are preparing to return to top-flight competition following their instant return from beating Leeds in the Championship play-off final.

Russell Martin's side finished fourth in the table before defeating West Brom on their way to promotion success at Wembley in May.

Triggered the permanent signature centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Manchester City in a £20m deal after his initial loan spell.

Southampton also welcomed Adam Lallana to the club on a one-year deal after a decade at Liverpool and Brighton.

Martin's team will join the top flight next season with Leicester City and Ipswich Town, and both teams are also going from strength to strength.

Leicester completed the permanent signing of Abdul Fatawu and Jamie Vardy signed a new contract, with Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna agreeing a new contract until 2028.

Southampton face a difficult return to the Premier League in August when they travel to Newcastle on opening weekend.

In their first home game they will host Nottingham Forest, while Brentford, Manchester United and fellow newcomers Ipswich Town will be their next opponents in the first five games.
