Ollie Watkins has spoken of his delight at being involved in his first major tournament with England.

Watkins is in Germany with the Three Lions as they look to challenge for European Championship glory.

It comes after an impressive domestic campaign which saw the Aston Villa striker net 27 goals and register 13 assists in all appearances.

And, speaking just hours before Euro 2024 gets underway, Watkins can’t wait to get started.

“For me, obviously it’s my first time being at a major tournament,” he told England’s Lions’ Den.

“It’s weird because I’ve been sat watching all the England games before, wishing I was there. Sat watching with my mates in pubs.

“It’s nice to be involved and I’m looking forward to it. I’m relishing it.”

Watkins has enjoyed 12 appearances for his country to date, scoring three goals.

He lines up in England’s 26-man squad for the tournament alongside Villa team-mate Ezri Konsa, who has four caps for his country.

England, who reached the final of the competition three years ago, will compete in Group C alongside Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia.

Gareth Southgate’s side open their campaign against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday (ko 8pm).

And asked about training preparations, Watkins said: “Towards the start of the week it’s more small-sided games, intense stuff.

“And then the closer it gets to the game you’re working on the opposition, what you’re going to do and how you’re going to go about the gameplan.

“It’s small details later on in the week.”
