It is his 21st Premier League goal, while the 21-year-old already has nine assists, meaning he has 30 league goals in his debut season.

Only one other player has equaled such a feat: Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink after signing for Chelsea in 2000, who scored 23 goals and provided seven assists.

And Palmer could have moved away from the Dutchman when he set up Conor Gallagher with a perfect ball on the other side of the box.

However, the midfielder's shot hit the crossbar in an attempt that really should have been deflected.

Palmer joined the Blues from Manchester City in a deal worth £45m but has already been affected by the speed with which he has adapted to life in west London.

The youngster will turn 22 on Monday and his latest goal means he is only the third player in Premier League history to reach more than 30 goals in a single season aged 21 or younger, after Robbie Fowler (94/95 and 95/96) and Chris Sutton (93/94).

Gallagher then doubled their lead on the half hour mark with a fine volley.

Noni Madueke closed the game before half-time after heading in from a corner.
